Raschig Ring Packing

The stepped ring packing incorporates the characteristics of the Raschig ring and represents an improvement over the Pall ring. With a height-to-diameter ratio of 1:2 and the addition of a conical flange at one end, it reduces the resistance of gas passing through the bed and increases the flow rate. The packing has high strength, and due to its structural features, it ensures uniform distribution of gas and liquid, increases the gas-liquid contact area, and enhances mass transfer efficiency. Ceramic stepped rings also break from the tradition of Raschig ring packing, where the ring height equals the diameter, by reducing the ring height, thinning the material thickness, and adding a flange on one end of the stepped ring. The addition of the flange not only increases the mechanical strength of the packing ring but also disrupts the symmetry of the packing structure, thereby increasing the directional probability during packing placement. Furthermore, due to the influence of the flange, the contact between packing voids during accumulation shifts from primarily linear contact to mainly point contact. This not only increases the voids between packing particles and reduces the resistance of gas passing through the packing layer but also allows these contact points to serve as convergence and dispersion points for liquid flowing along the packing surface, thereby promoting surface renewal of the liquid film and improving mass transfer efficiency. As a result, the performance of stepped ring packing has been further enhanced compared to Pall ring packing.
